Women Euroleague recap

The regular season of the womens Euroleague ended last week. The new schedule of the competetion resulted a longer regular season, a shorter (1 round) Playoffs and insted of the old fashion Final Four the season will take an end with a Final Eight. The Final Eight will take place in Istanbul from the 28th of March until 1th of April.

In this years competition Hungary was represented by two clubs (Sopron and Gyor) while our agency had 11 Hungarian players and one American player, Quanitra Hollingsworth (in our country we are her representatives) playing in the Euroleague. Unfortunately this year non of our clubs could pass the group stage but the newcomer team Gyor had 3 wins in its Euroleague debut season which is really impressive.

Zsofia Fegyverneky averaged 11.8 points and 4.3 assists being the best Hungarian guard. Instead of playing on the SG position she played most of the time as a PG where she did a great job showing her leadership, defensive and team playing skills.
Her teammate Dora Horti helped the team with 10.1 points and 6.9 rebounds in the regular season. She had double-doubles several times and after Krivacevic’s transfer she showed that as a first option at the Center position she could be a great leader on the team.
Dia Furesz stepped up big this season as she played 25 minutes per game while she had 6.4ppg. Dia had her season high 16 points against russian team Nadezhda.
Timea Czank the PG of the 2006 European Championship silver medalist U-20 team of Hungary came back this season after a knee injury and it was good to see that she could already contribute in the Euroleague.
The Forward Nora Nagy-Bujdoso signed from Pecs and had to play in a new role as a PF for her new team in the Euroleague. Nora was the most experienced player of Gyor with only 27 years of age and she played 30mpg averaging 8.2ppg and 5.2rpg and did a great job on the defensive end the entire season.
Zsofia Simon the other forward at Gyor was a key player for her team this season. She played 26 minutes a game averaging 5.5 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.6 assist.

One of the bright stars of this season was Rita Rasheed who played his rookie season in the Euroleague. The 23 years old Guard had 11.3ppg and in the win against Gdyniai she had an amazing 28 point performance. This year she prooved the doubters wrong and showed that she is a player who can play on the highest level.
Barbara Semsei just like Czank came back after a knee injury. She joined the team in January and helped Gyor with her defensive and leadership skills.
The youngster PF Gyorgyi Ori had his debut season in the Euroleague this year and played really impressive against the top team Jekatyerinburg convergint all his three-pointers (3/3) and grabbed also 7 rebounds.
After Montgomery leaved the team Anna Lakloth got more and more playing time and she could live with that as she was named as a starter for the games at the end of the regular season.
Kata Furtos played 4 games in the competition.

Quanitra Hollingsworth prooved this year that she is one of the most dominant players int he Euroleague. The American Center recorded double-double with 14.8 points and 10.1 rebound per game (2nd best in the Euroleague) while on the defensive end with many blokked shoots she was a feared force.
